🇮🇹 ITALY TARGETS MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD NETWORKS AND FOREIGN MOSQUE FUNDING Italy is stepping up scrutiny of networks allegedly connected to the Muslim Brotherhood, with particular attention on the Milan and Turin areas. Investigators have identified organisations in northern Italy that they say operate within a wider Brotherhood-linked network, including the Italian Islamic Alliance in Sesto San Giovanni and Young Muslims of Italy. Authorities have also examined links between Islamist activists, fundraising operations and pro-Palestinian mobilisation. The crackdown has also focused on Mohammad Hannoun, president of the Association of Palestinians in Italy and founder of the Genoa-based ABSPP charity. Italian prosecutors allege that Hannoun and associates used ostensibly humanitarian fundraising to channel more than €7 million to Hamas and organisations connected to Hamas. Nine people were arrested and more than €8 million in assets were seized. Now Matteo Salvini’s League is pushing measures aimed at increasing scrutiny of foreign financing for mosques, religious organisations, associations and imams. The developments reflect growing concern across Europe about foreign funding and the organisational networks supporting Islamist movements. The Muslim Brotherhood has established networks across Europe and the Middle East, while being prohibited or heavily restricted in several Arab states, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Jordan. Italy appears increasingly willing to confront the question that many European governments have avoided: Who is funding these organisations, where does the money go, and what networks does it support?
